A full year after a photo shoot and interview at Westbury Gardens 2010 Zone 1 Concours, Donna’s 1962 356B S90 cabriolet made the June issue of Excellance Magazine. Dominick Miliano continued the shoot in the Fall after the editor wanted Donna in the car driving. It was perfect timing for the magazine to come out just before the 32nd Zone Concours.
Donna was in Florida puppy sitting our son Thomas’ boxer, Kojak while he and his fiancé were in Key West, a trip he won at his companies Christmas party. He flew to Jimmy Buffets private house where they spent three days relaxing in Margaritaville. I decided to drive to Southbury, CT on my own since Donna and I only missed one concours in 31 years, the weekend Thomas graduated from college in Tampa.
This year’s event was run by CVR’s Lew Trusheim even though Lew was recently diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). His daughter and wife were instrumental in the organization of this event. The weather was predicted to be rainy with more rain so I did not decide until the last minute to take the 356 instead of the A4 Audi. I am sure Donna would have put a for sale sign on the Porsche if I took the Audi. I made the correct choice since I did not hit any rain in the 130 mile run. Arriving at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, I thought I was at the wrong hotel since there was not a Porsche in sight. Later to find out that the start of the rally was at the Heritage Inn Hotel five miles away.
I was happy to meet a couple with a 1967 pro rally 911 in a large closed trailer. Then a couple in a 2009 997 just arrived. Finally a familiar face, Jeff and Margie McFadden arriving from the rally arrived in their 1957 356A outlaw. We spent time cleaning our cars after the trip and rally until it was time for the Zone 1 dinner. Prescott Kelly gave a superb program on Ferdinand Porsche to 40 PCA members and by 10:00 the program was over and I was ready to watch some Yankee baseball.
When I woke at 5:30, it was pouring. Jeff and I decided to leave by 8:00 to drive to the Oxford airport where the concours would take place in an airplane hanger. As the rain continued and breakfast was served, I put the top down on our cab and continued to dry off the rain soaked Porsche. I was happy to see many NNJR cars arrive and a special treat was to see my friend Ernst Benzien and his 1964 904 GTS that Ray and I restored in 1996.
As the rain continued we were all happy to be dry and I began judging 7 cars without issue. I judged exterior, Jerry Manna engine and Joyce and Chuck Gladle judged interior and storage. Judging was completed by noon and NNJR did well. Akemi and Murray Kane won the coveted Best of Show with their black 964 turbo, Bob Knapik took first in the judged 911 class, Jeff and Margie McFadden took first in the judged 356 class. Jerry and Barbara Manna took a first in the People’s Choice with their 911 Speedster and we won People’s Choice with Donna’s 1962 356B cabriolet. CVR friend Ernst Benzien also won first in class with his 904GTS.
After a group shot of winners, I began my two hour drive back to Chatham. With the car feeling great, we should have no issues driving to the Porsche Parade in Savannah in a few short months. I was anxious to call Donna to tell her how well her car did and not to worry about our long drive to Georgia.
Thanks to all the Trusheims for their hard work in hosting yet again another great event. Newport Rhode Island next year!!!
