| Autocross – The Backside of the Cone |

By Drew Karpinski
What a great first event of the year! If you weren’t there, you missed a good one. We had a summer-like 70 degree day with a cloudless, blue sky. Though a record-high 150 cars decided to show up, we all managed to get in eight runs each…and we still finished before 4:30! The battle for FTD was hotly contested between Steve McQueen in a Carrera GT (easily the class of S8 this season), and upstart hot shoe James Dean in a well set-up Boxster S. In the end, Dean edged out the CGT by a tenth (and in a sign of great sportsmanship, McQueen held up a lone finger to let Dean know he was #1). It was a little confusing, though, when Abe Lincoln showed up to help award the trophies…and what is with the talking beaver and the guy in the deep sea diving suit blowing the horn to hurry him up?

| Concours 2008 - READY, SET, GO! |

By Hank Menkes and Ben Rasmussen
The 2008 Concours season is off to a great start! We have had two outstanding workshops and one competitive event, and the season has just started. All of us on the Concours Committee - and we are sure we speak for all the attendees as well - would like to extend a sincere thank you to John and Ray Paterek for once again opening their shop and hosting a great instructional workshop. NNJR is privileged to have these two talented masters of restoration as our tutors. Thanks again John and Ray.

| May 14th Monthly Meeting: The Great Auto Race of 1908 |

By David Garcia, 2008 Program Chair
This year marks the centennial of one of the most remarkable motor sports events of the 20th century, the race from New York to Paris in 1908, long before today’s modern highways and fuel stations.
One hundred years ago, 17 men from 4 nations - France, Italy, Germany and the United States - participated in this race sponsored by the New York Times and La Matin (a Paris newspaper). The ultimate winner was the U.S. entry The Thomas Flyer, driven by George Schuster Sr. of Buffalo, N.Y. | |
